The very last spacing application
No longer required in the Cardium
Down spacing applications have been the most popular approval requested from the AER. But what if you didn't need to apply for downspacing ever again?
The very last Cardium spacing application was approved in September. As of last week, downspacing applications are no longer necessary in the Cardium. Neither gas spacing applications, nor oil spacing applications need be submitted.

The AER's Subsurface Order No. 5 went into effect this last week. It grants relaxation of many aspects of oil and gas production activity in the Cardium formation.
Unlimited well density subject is now the order of the day in the Cardium. The only restriction is to stay out of a buffer of 100 m within a DSU boundary. Drill as many wells as you like in whatever orientation you wish. Even across DSU boundaries if you own the rights on both sides of that boundary.
The Cardium formation to which the new subsurface order applies is a superset of the Pembina field. It also includes the Cardium in fields almost as far south as Calgary.
Relaxed regulations on pressure testing and deliverability testing are also mandated by the regulator. For example, annual pressure tests are not required.
Visit the AER's website to read the new Subsurface Order No. 5 Regarding the Cardium Formation.
But this area still needs applications for enhanced recovery, disposal, new wells, pipelines and facilities. You can get an email alert whenever one is submitted near your area of interest.
