How a new data service can save you millions in capital costs

chemical experimentHow do you find new ideas that will improve your bottom line? Where do you look for the inspiration to see oil fields in a different light with a new prespective?

Now a new data service can save you millions in capital costs. One operator tried to quickly copy new ideas he found to start a new gas injection pilot for a very tight pool. He'll save big on tie-in capital.

He proposes to inject sweet gas into this light oil limestone pool. Even though the permeability of his pool is less than 1 mD, he hopes for 7% incremental recovery.

We watch the new ideas of the industry.

Applications are a leading indicator of industry activity. By watching the technology in new applications, you can save big in capital costs.

Re-injecting solution gas into an oil pool is being used by more and more operators for three reasons. First, you save the cost of gas transportation for a new installation. Second, you may be able to stop the loss on gas sales. And last, you're increasing the pressure in your flood keeping production rates high.

As a bonus, you may also increase recovery depending on pressures and make up of your solution gas.

Save tie-in capital

By injecting your solution gas, you don't need any gas pipeline connection. If you're trucking the oil, you can save by not tieing in your project at all.

Depending on your distance from existing gas transmission lines, the capital you save could be more than the injection compression capital required.

Stop losing cash on gas

Depending on your gas transmission costs, your gas sales may be underwater. Many companies are making a bit of cash on their oil production but losing it on their solution gas sales.

Re-injecting solution gas into your oil pool may allow you to eliminate any losses on gas sales.

You can always produce the gas again when you blow down the pool.

Keep the pressure up

Any time you inject into your oil pool, you reduce the net voidage and keep the pressure higher. Higher pressure translates into high production rates and better cash flow.

Therefore re-injecting gas into your pool not only decreases your gas losses, but increases your oil sales.

...and maybe better recovery

Gas miscible flooding promises stellar recovery factors. Some miacibly flooded pools boast 75% recovery of oil in place. Compare that to 5-10% recovery for many primary oil pools.

Gas re-injection doesn't always get the same awesome recovery as miscible flooding. That depends on many factors including PVT, pressure, structure and rock properties.

Still, gas flooding without the special conditions that promote miscibility between hydrocarbon injectant and reservoir oil has provided a small incremental recovery in many reservoirs.
