Mitigating wells not ready for thermal operations

Every thermal bitumen recovery scheme must deal with old wells in the area that are not compatible with a steaming operation.

An operator of this scheme discussed all the wells at risk from thermal operations within the scheme boundaries. She argued how each type should be mitigated.

She reviewed testing requirements outlined in Thermal Well Casing Connection Evaluation Protocol (TWCCEP).

She pointed out various types of monitoring wells and argued that they need not be abandoned. She reviewed other wells including temperature monitoring wells using thermocouples, pore pressure monitoring wells with vibrating wire piezometers, and water sampling and monitoring wells using sampling ports.
