What does this SAGD operator, a rock star and a civil war hero have in common?

Admiral David FarragutAt $45 oil, one operator is pushing forward with an expansion of his SAGD project.

Perhaps he's moving forward because he believes he has found a secret to reducing the cost of steam generation. He's moving forward when uncertainty rules other SAGD operators.

In his application you can see his plans, his new pads, his steam generation strategy and many other technical details.

What does this SAGD operator, a rock star and a civil war hero have in common?

Civil war hero

The phrase "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead" is attributed to Admiral David G. Farragut. His command was during the Battle of Mobile Bay of the American Civil War on 5 August 1864. Admiral Farrugut's fleet approached the harbor entrance, which was known to be nearly closed by mines. His actual command was "Damn the torpedoes! Four bells. Captain Drayton, go ahead! Jouett, full speed!".

Farragut, in the flagship Hartford, took the lead, signaling the fleet to follow, and steamed safely through the mine fields into the harbor under heavy Confederate cross fire from ships and three forts on the land. Only one of the ships of his fleet was sunk by a mine. His armada overpowered the Confederate fleet and forced the surrender of the land forts.

Mobile Bay had been the last important port on the Gulf of Mexico east of the Mississippi River remaining in Confederate possession, so its closure was the final step in completing the blockade in that region.

The 70's rocker

guitaurMore than 100 years later, a rocker name Tom Petty named his third album Damn the Torpedoes.

It was the Heartbreakers' first top 10 album rising to #2 for seven weeks on the Billboard album chart. It was kept from #1 by Pink Floyd's The Wall. It yielded two songs that made the top 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, "Don't Do Me Like That" (#10) and "Refugee" (#15).

Many 70's rock fans believe that Damn the Torpedoes was the last great classic rock album. Many of the great names of the 70's were winding down. The compact disk would be introduced three years later.

But Petty was just hitting his stride. Damn the Torpedoes brought the end of the classic realm of rock and roll.

The SAGD operator

bitumen net payWhile other operators are in a holding pattern and even suspending their operations, this one private company is expanding his SAGD operation.

Perhaps he believes he has the key to generating cheap steam. Perhaps he has a rosy view of the future of oil prices. And perhaps he is counter-cyclical believing that the best time to invest is when nobody else is.

As my favorite German poet wrote:
    What you can do, or dream you can do, begin it;
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.

Time will tell if this operator is as successful and Farrugut and Petty.

This operator also showed his seismic interpretations. In his application, you can see his Mannville bitumen net pay map from 3-D seismic.
