Bi-directional pipeline refused
Bi-directional flow adds flexibility
Bi-directional pipelines have the ability to flow east to west, or alternatively west to east. They add operational flexibility to a system and reduce cost at the same time. They can't be used everywhere, but in certain circumstances they are very handy.
But unfortunately, this new bi-directional pipeline application was refused by the regulator. We found this information using AppIntel.
Like all pipeline installations, bi-directional pipelines must be approved by the regulator. But there are additional requirements for such applications. If you don't know those additional requirements, your pipeline project could be stalled while you await regulatory approval.

Although this particular pipeline is only a few miles long, many long system transmission pipelines are starting to be redeveloped bi-directionally.
Big example: Transmission systems through Marcellus shale
New bi-directional pipelines are not as common as a change in status (and flow direction) of existing lines. For example, many installed lines in the Marcellus/Utica area are experiencing new bi-directional flow adding flexibility to the transmission system in the area.
Transmission systems that used to bring natural gas into the North-eastern United States now need to take gas out of the region during the summer due to the new production in the Marcellus shale. Seasonal demand shifts create the need for new markets. Transmission companies found an answer in bi-directional flow.
Physical reversal of flow in these transmission systems enables gas to exit the region during the summer and improves gas pricing for the shale gas in the area. This creates a lot of marketing excitement as natural gas marketing companies shift consumer points seasonally.
