Self Storage of Acid Gas

Empty self storage unitWhat to do with acid gas? Process, store or flood?

Sometimes it pays to process acid gas into sulphur. But often the yellow mineral product is just poured on the ground to await a high enough price to sell.

Some operators store it in an underground formation. By doing so, they save the capex and operating headaches of a Claus sulphur plant.

But a few operators use it to flood oil pools. A miscible flood using acid gas can significantly improve oil recovery.

Acid gas a good tertiary recovery solvent

Acid gas can act as a good solvent for oil tertiary recovery in the right circumstances. The operator of this flood claims an ultimate recovery of almost 42% under acid gas flood. You can see his analysis of the performance of this flood by ordering his application through AppIntel. Just use our secure self-serve check out.

Acid gas sequestration can eliminate the cost of a sulphur plant. The injection can also improve oil recovery if it's done right. Yet there are risks and dangers.

Let's be sure we're all thinking about the same fluid. Acid gas contains only carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide. All the other valuable hydrocarbons have been stripped out.

One operator has been operating his acid gas tertiary injection flood for ten years. You can see one of his applications for approval by clicking the "Get this application now" button below.

Handling acid gas brings special challenges

Acid gas is a tricky fluid. It's PVT characteristics are not well documented in the scientific literature.

In addition, handling this corrosive fluid requires special pipeline, tubing, wellhead and valve considerations.

Not only are injection facilities at risk, but acid gas production will eventually show up in the well effluent stream. Protection of production facilities is also required.

Ensuring the acid gas stays in the formation is a very important part of the flood plan. The operator of this flood used monitoring for any acid gas in an uphole formation to prove containment to the regulator.
